Openbaar Ministerie
The English translation for Openbaar Ministerie (OM) is the Public Prosecution Service. It is the only agency in the Netherlands that can bring suspects before the criminal court. The OM ensures that criminal offenses are investigated and prosecuted. For this purpose, it cooperates with the police and other investigative services. The public prosecutor directs the investigation.
The consortium recognizes the importance of studying the way public administration and constitutional democracy can deal even-handedly with and offer a transparent legal framework for the proposed advances in (nano)technology and the cognitive sciences. Existing administrative procedures and legislation are often an obstacle to innovation, therefore key actors like the Public Prosecutor (in Dutch “Openbaar Ministerie (OM)”) are included in this consortium and special attention is given to these subjects in the work packages.
